Leichhardt House was established in 1995 with one clear purpose:
To make high school education more accessible for families in rural and remote communities across the Western Downs.
Since then, the residence has welcomed hundreds of students who needed to live away from home to attend school — providing not just room and board, but a caring, structured, and community-minded environment to support their growth.
Leichhardt House began with the determination of local parents who saw a need for accessible student accommodation. Today, we remain true to that mission — helping rural families manage the challenges of high school access, travel, and distance by offering a Monday–Friday boarding option right here in Chinchilla. We’re here to support students during the week, so families can stay connected on weekends.
We are proudly non-profit and community-governed, with strong ties to local schools and families.
Our residence offers flexible, structured weekday boarding that supports students academically, socially, and emotionally. From shared meals and study time to sport, music, or just hanging out in the rec shed — life at Leichhardt House is about feeling safe, supported and connected.
Leichhardt House is governed by the CSAA, a not-for-profit incorporated association responsible for the management and strategic direction of the residence.
The committee meets quarterly and welcomes input from parents, carers, school representatives, and community members. To better understand the goals that guide our work, you can read more about our Vision and Strategy here.
Kim and Gavin Woods. Since joining in Term 1, 2024, Kim and Gavin have brought warmth, structure, and care to their roles as live-in house parents. They are committed to creating a safe and welcoming home for boarders — supporting each student’s wellbeing, routine, and individual needs. They work closely with families to ensure a smooth transition into residence life and are available for contact throughout the school week.
“We look after every student like we’d want our own children to be looked after.” – Kim Woods
